Driver Background Checks

Employers who need to hire drivers often cite lack of funds as the main reason for not conducting a thorough background check on new employers. Since a driver who is not qualified to drive a commercial vehicle, or who may have a record of traffic offenses, could turn out to be a huge liability, this is not sound reasoning. Often a good safety record is essential to businesses that have fleets of trucks or trailers. One accident is one too many.

There are many horror stories told by reformed business owners who hired without conducting driver background checks. Since larger vehicles cost a lot more to repair, the saving in hiring only the best drivers can be considerable. Aside from that, the cost to you in lost business could be crippling.

Guidelines for Driver Checks

Some guidelines for checking out drivers include the following: Always confirm citizenship. This may seem elementary, but having a driver who isn't even qualified to drive in the US can cause lots of problems, so don't overlook it. It is essential to request references from past employers. Failing to do this is negligence.

Any large gaps in a driver's employment should be investigated. It's probably nothing, but gaps can sometimes signal that all is not well. Failure to conduct a criminal background check is also tantamount to negligence. Some criminals love driving jobs because it gives them the mobility and alibi they need to commit crimes. Don't get caught up in this. Big companies should arrange for their own tests that every driver should take. Driving tests will immediately eliminate a driver who does not have the know-how and experience.
