Many people are interested in using background searches to find out information about individuals. There are a few different types of searches that can be used to acquire information. Basic identity checks and criminal checks are fairly easy to obtain since they collect information from public records. Background searches can be more difficult and expensive to obtain because they provide much more personal information.

Background searches are primarily designed to be used for employment purposes. Employers can obtain background searches for employee applicants or for existing employees. Employers must also provide subjects of background searches with written notification before accessing their information. In turn, subjects must also consent to background searches in writing. Rules regarding background searches are governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Using Online Background Searches

Depending on the screening service you choose, background searches can take some time to process. Many employers are turning to online services because they are faster and more convenient. For simple background searches that provide basic identity information, some employers can receive their results instantly online. It may take extra time for comprehensive background searches to be obtained.

Online background searches provide more than just identity information such as names, phone numbers, and addresses. They also reveal qualities of character, personal characteristics, and modes of living. In every state besides California, background searches also reveal credit standings and credit worthiness. You can discover information about legal judgments, tax liens, bankruptcies, address histories, licenses, and even information about neighbors, roommates, or relatives.
