Online Employment Background ChecksWritten by Jill Morrison If you are concerned with hiring high-quality and trustworthy employees, you may want to consider conducting background checks on your applicants. The easiest way to find background checking services is by searching online. Plenty of websites are available that allow you to check the identities or backgrounds of different applicants. Before choosing one of these online services, you should clarify prices, what information is offered, and if they comply with laws relating to employment background checks. Using Online Employment Background ChecksOnline background checks are reports that are collected about individuals who are applying for positions of employment. Background checks can indicate character, general reputation, mode of living, personal characteristics, credit standing, and credit worthiness for individual applicants. In California, background checks are known as "investigative consumer reports." These reports provide information about character, general reputation, and personal characteristics. However, they do not provide credit standing or worthiness information. The Fair Credit Reporting Act, or FCRA, sets the standard for employment background checks. It is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission and covers credit and consumer information. This information can be used by employers to make decisions about which applicants to hire. Because of privacy issues, the ability for employers to access background checks is limited. Even so, this law makes no distinctions between small and large businesses. The FCRA does not require that all employers use background checks for hiring new employees. Background checks are simply an added precaution in the hiring process. Certain companies may make background checks a mandatory part of applying for particular jobs. These applicants must agree to submit to a background check before applying for positions. Criminal background checks may also be used by certain professions that involve contact with different types and ages of people, such as in education or the trucking industry.
