Many employers are interested in learning more about background checks. They can be accessed by employers at any time, as long as they are used for employment purposes. To legally conduct background checks, employers must initially notify their subjects in writing. Subjects must then submit written consents for background checks to be performed. Background checks can be very helpful when hiring new employees and for checking up on existing employees.

Characteristics of Background Checks

Background checks can be used to find out information about identity, criminal behavior, reputation, character, or personal characteristics. Most employers will only use basic identity checks or criminal checks for screening applicants. Identity checks can reveal names, addresses, birth dates, home phone numbers, average home prices, and average incomes that are listed in public records. Non-published phone numbers, cell phone numbers, and e-mail addresses cannot be found in identity checks because they are not listed in public records.

If employers simply want to check for criminal behavior, they can use a criminal check for employee applicants. These checks can also be used on current employees who are acting suspiciously. Criminal checks will show any past county offenses, sex offenses, felonies, or misdemeanors on the records of individuals. When employers need more extensive information, they can use complete background checks instead. These checks will show legal judgments, tax liens, property information, social security numbers, credit payment records, driving records, and bankruptcies.

More information about background checks can be found through various online services. Each service may have its own rates and may only give out certain types of information in background checks. Before choosing an appropriate company, you should make sure that they comply with the FCRA. The FCRA, or Fair Credit Reporting Act, sets the standards for background checks in regards to employment.
