Dyneema ArmorWritten by Renee Eng Reinforcing body armor with panels of Dyneema armor, also known as Spectra in the USA, has been found to substantially increase protection levels while decreasing the weight of a given garment. This is always highly desirable and offers a new dimension for body armor. Dyneema inserts will not be affected by water or moisture, and so are useful for all kinds of combat situations. In some cases, Dyneema inserts can be used to replace existing body armor inserts, or even to be used alongside them. In addition to the use of body armor, individuals and organizations often use armored panels, such as Dyneema armor to reinforce the sides of vehicles and boats for added personnel safety. The US government has obliged airlines which fly to and from the USA to have reinforced cockpit doors. Almost all (90%) cockpit doors of US airlines have been reinforced with Dyneema panels because of their strength and very light weight. Why Dyneema Armor?Dyneema armor panels are very versatile, and considerably lighter than traditional steel armored panels. They weigh less than 10lbs per square meter, so add a lot less weight for cars and aircraft than would steel plates. Because Dyneema panels are also very thin, they are easy to install on any kind of vehicle or craft, and require no replacement of hinges or any other adjustments to bodywork. Yet another advantage of Dyneema armor is that it can be reused. When a vehicle or craft is replaced, the panels can simply be removed from the old one and installed in the new one, with the same ease and convenience. Dyneema armor has been in use in European countries since the mid-1990s and its use is increasing steadily due to its reliability and versatility.
