Surveillance Equipment

What does surveillance really mean? One such definition I came across describes surveillance as the systematic examination of air, surface or subterranean areas via visual, electronic, photographic or other means, for the gathering of intelligence or other causes. The term "surveillance" used to be a term reserved for police detectives and private detectives. With the introduction of video technology, surveillance grew to incorporate much more.

If you recently opened a business, even if it operates out of your own home, you should investigate private security options. You will probably need some sort of surveillance equipment. Before you go out and buy a great deal of equipment, you should first assess your needs. Closely examine your premises and get a clear idea of what type of surveillance equipment would work best to protect your office(s).

Some Important Questions to Ask Yourself

When it comes to buying surveillance equipment, you should ask the seller a few key questions. First, ask about the receivers. If your office has thick walls, ask if the receiver will work through walls up to two feet thick. Ask if you can use your own VCR for recording. Let the security products company you're dealing with know the dimensions of your office building so they can recommend the right kind of camera.

In addition, ask about low light cameras and infrared cameras. Is night vision necessary for your needs? It's probably good to mount cameras that work well in low light. There are a ton of other questions to ask, so don't be afraid to ask them.
