Currently, Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. has no runways and no aircraft. It does, however, have a long legacy of active service during the two World Wars. Some of the heroes of early aviation that have passed through Bolling include Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, Billy Mitchell, H.H. Arnold, Jimmy Doolittle, and Wiley Post.

"The Chief's Own"

Today the 11th Wing at Bolling AFB is solely responsible for all activities supporting Air Force Headquarters. They also supervise other Air Force units in the Capital Region and in 152 countries throughout the world. In addition to administrative, operating and logistical support, the 11th Wing also provides ceremonial, protocol and medical services.

As one of the largest and most ceremonial wings in the Air Force, the 11th Wing has jurisdiction for the Uniform Code of Military Justice over all air staff, the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The 11th is home to the U.S. Air Force Band and U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, and provides support to the Air Force chief of staff, secretary of the Air Force, the White House and other entities for funerals, ceremonies and other protocol activities.

The Air Force Surgeon General is one of the tenant organizations at Bolling. Others include the Office of Special Investigations, the Air Force Central Adjudication Facility, the Directorate of Departmental Publishing, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. This incredible diversity, plus the excitement of the nation's capital, make Bolling a highly desirable posting.
