Goodfellow Air Force Base, located near San Angelo, Texas, is home to the 17th Training Wing. Goodfellow's primary mission is to provide training in cryptology and general military intelligence. They provide this training not only to Air Force personnel, but also to the other branches of the US Armed Forces and certain allied nations.

The intelligence curriculum is intensive, and includes courses in code analysis, intelligence applications and operations, targeting, and maintenance of intelligence-related communications and electronics equipment. Among Goodfellow's tenant organizations are the Army's 344th Military Intelligence Battalion, the Navy's Center for Cryptology and a Marine Corps detachment. All Air Force intelligence training was consolidated at Goodfellow in 1988, allowing the development of a multidisciplinary approach to training intelligence personnel.

Goodfellow was first established as a pilot training center in 1941, and from then until the end of the war, more than 10,000 pilots graduated from the base. Goodfellow continued to train pilots after the end of World War II up until 1958, when the mission was changed to cryptology and intelligence. In 1966, the mission was expanded to include training for Army, Navy, and Marine Corps personnel.

The Louis F. Garland Fire Academy

In addition to training in intelligence and cryptology, the Marine Corps Detachment at Goodfellow AFB supports the Louis F. Garland Fire Academy. This training consists of a two-month curriculum in structural firefighting, hazardous materials, and aircraft firefighting. More than 300 Marines graduate annually from the Fire Academy.
