Moody Air Force Base in Georgia is the home of the 347th Rescue Wing, the Air Force's only active-duty combat search and rescue wing. The 347th Rescue Wing trains for and executes worldwide search and rescue operations, in peacetime as well as in combat. Fittingly, the image on their patch is of a knight on a white horse.

The 820th Security Forces Group is one of the most important of the many tenant organizations at Moody AFB. Their mission is focused on providing highly trained and extremely mobile security forces, which provide protection for U.S. forces anywhere in the world. These troops work in support of the Air Force Global Engagement mission.

Changing Missions at Moody AFB

Rescue is only the most recent of the many missions served at Moody Air Force Base. From 1941 to 1975, it was a pilot training base. From 1975 to 2001, the base mission changed from pilot training to flying fighters, begun when the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing relocated there from Thailand. In May 2001, Moody became the home of the 347th Rescue Wing.

Moody Air Force Base has had many accolades in recent years. The base won the Commander-in-Chief's Installation Excellence Award for 1991, and the 1994 Verne Orr Award, which is won by the unit that most effectively uses human resources to accomplish its mission. In June 1997, the wing was awarded its eighth Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. Clearly, the white knights at Moody are doing it right.
