Robins Air Force BaseWritten by Sarah Provost Robins Air Force Base, located south of Macon in central Georgia, is the largest industrial complex in the entire state. It employs more than 5,000 military and nearly 13,000 civilian employees. The base has gone through a number of name changes and reclassifications since its inception in 1943. Since 1974, it has been known as the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC). The Center's mission has always been in the field of materiel. From World War II to the present time, the Center has supplied US troops with planes, parts, maintenance, weapons systems and technology. As technology has grown, so has the base, which now has 3.9 million square feet of maintenance shops and is capable of handling the largest aircraft in the world. Robins AFB Hosts the Museum of AviationRobins Air Force Base is noted particularly for its Museum of Aviation, which opened in 1984 and now has four major structures on a 43-acre site. Ninety historic aircraft are on display, including a U-2, B-57 and MiG fighter. More than 550,000 people visit the Museum each year. One of the most interesting and significant exhibits held at the Museum was America's Black Eagles: Tuskegee Pioneers and Beyond. This exhibit, which opened in May of 1997, was gathered in a new 5,000-foot display area. The display included the BT-13 used as the Tuskegee Airmen's basic trainer aircraft, a diorama of Tuskegee Army Air Field and historic films narrated by former President Ronald Reagan.
