Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina is the home of the 4th Training Squadron. Working with 98 F-15E Strike Eagles, their mission is to train fighter pilots and crews. Instructions are provided in the classroom, the simulator, and the airplane, making the 4th Training Squadron the only F-15E academic squadron in the world.

The 4th TS consists of 59 permanent staff and between 90 and 100 students. The officers are Formal Training Unit (FTU) Instructors. They are joined by Boeing Contractors, many of them former fighter pilots. There are also 12 computer experts responsible for the academic courseware. The Training Devices section is responsible for maintaining the simulators and trainers.

The F-15E Strike Eagle
The first F-15E Strike Eagle is generally considered to be the best fighter plane in the world. Previous models used only a pilot and were limited to air-to-air maneuvers. The F-15E, however, uses two crew members, a pilot and a weapon systems officer, and can perform dual roles.

The advanced avionics system in the F-15E is truly exceptional. One of the most interesting advances is the Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night system, aka LANTIRN. A navigation pod contains terrain-following radar, which can be linked to the autopilot so that the plane can follow the terrain, even in darkness, without the pilot's intervention. The second pod is the targeting pod, which can pinpoint a target from as far away as 10 miles and automatically inform air-to-surface missiles or laser-guided bombs.
