Travis Air Force Base is located in northern California, midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. San Jose and Oakland are also within a 70-mile radius, and the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma Valleys are nearby. Places of great natural beauty such as Yosemite, Tahoe and Big Sur are also within easy traveling distance.

The host unit at Travis Air Force Base is the 60th Air Mobility Wing. The 60th is the largest wing in the Air Force's Air Mobility Command, with 37 C-5 Galaxies and 27 KC-10 Extenders. Their primary purposes are strategic airlifts and aerial refueling, respectively.

"Gateway to the Pacific"The excellent strategic location of Travis Air Force Base extends the reach of their operations. They normally cover the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including Alaska and Antarctica. However, they are capable of flying support missions anywhere across the globe.

The 60th Air Mobility Wing is divided into four groups and 15 staff agencies. The Operations Group includes the 21st and 22nd Airlift Squadrons and the 6th and 9th Refueling Squadrons. The Maintenance Group provides the technological support to keep all aircraft flying. The Mission Support Group included civil engineers, communications, logistics and other support services.

The Medical Group operates the David Grant Medical Center, a $193 million state-of-the-art medical facility serving more than 250,000 military beneficiaries, with an annual budget of more than $120 million. Staff agencies include administrative, legal, safety, public affairs and employment offices, among others. They also manage the Jimmy Doolittle Air and Space Museum.
