Passport Renewals

If you need to renew an existing passport, the process is quite simple. Obtain a copy of a passport renewal form (Form DS-82) from a passport agency, or simply download it from the state department's website. Fill out this form and mail it back to the address at the bottom of the page.

What to Send

With the passport renewal form, you need to include your old expired passport as well as two passport photos. These photos must be 2"x2", and be frontal face photographs of yourself against a blank background. The photos have to be recent (taken within the last six months) and can be either color or black and white.

The fee for renewing a US Passport is $55, which must be sent in with the passport renewal form. A new passport will be mailed to you within six weeks. This process can be expedited through the state department for an additional $60 fee per application. An expedited application takes approximately two weeks to process.

You can only renew via mail if the following conditions are true: You must have your original passport (it cannot be lost or stolen), and it must be undamaged. Your passport must not have been issued more than 15 years before you apply to renew it. In addition, if you were under the age of 16 when your passport was issued and you are now over 16, you must apply in person to renew your passport.
