Computer BadgesWritten by Serena Berger There are a number of benefits to computerizing your company's security or ID badges. One advantage is that it gives you an easy way to maintain a log of visitors--you simply save any information that you print onto badges, and then you can call it up again should the need arise. You can search for any given individual, or search for a time and find out everyone who would have had a valid badge at that time. Equipment and Supplies to Make Computer BadgesThere is some specialized equipment required to make computer badges, and the best types of self-expiring temporary ID badges require a special printer. This is actually a quite modest initial investment for a piece of equipment that will work for years. The common models cost between $300 and $1,200 for a printer that can handle a variety of sizes of self-expiring badges. With certain types of printers, you will have to monitor and restock the accessories that are required to make computer badges. However, there are thermal printers available that print badges without costly ribbons, toner, and ink cartridges. You may also choose to laminate your labels--some badge printers do this for you, and others require that you purchase a separate laminator. You also want to stock supplies to hang or attach the badges that you make. If you are making computer badges, you also have the very convenient ability to prepare in advance for visiting groups. You can get a spreadsheet from a representative of the group and easily merge the required information into label printing software. You can custom design your own labels, or use pre-designed layouts--whichever suits your style and time frame.
