Id HologramsWritten by Michael Federico ID holograms are considered by many to be the best defense against identification card forgery. There are other, less expensive methods that have proven to be successful as well. Ultraviolet printing, micro printing, image ghosting, and gradient screens all make IDs harder to duplicate. However, none of those methods are as effective as holograms. The overlaminate that is supplied is specially made with a hologram on it. Then the printer applies the holographic overlaminate to the card if it has a factory installed or field upgradeable lamination module. There are standard holographic overlaminates that can be purchased or you can have your own made with a graphic or company logo. There are also peel and stick holograms that must be applied by hand. However, when most companies want IDs with holographic overlays they seek the help of a professional service. Are ID Holograms Worth It?Not everyone needs ID holograms. They offer a level of security that is simply not necessary for many companies and organizations. The use of holograms should occur when a group has a legitimate concern that IDs will be duplicated. Many governments use them for drivers' licenses to stem the production of fakes. While the IDs are tough to falsify, their validity is easy to check. No special lights or equipment are required, so a bouncer at a bar who has had a little bit of training will easily be able to determine if a license is real or not. Mass-producing ID holograms will usually cost thousands of dollars, but they can save a company or government agency far more than that in the long run. Security is a major concern for many organizations. Those groups will most likely find that the use of holograms on ID cards is well worth the cost.
