Proximity CardsWritten by Michael Federico Proximity cards are a step up from magnetic stripe IDs. A proximity card, unlike a mag card, does not have to come in direct contact with a reader to work. These are the cards that can be waved in front of a sensor to unlock a door. They are used in a number of offices, because they offer an added level of security. A proximity card contains a wire and a memory chip. Card readers give off an energy field that is taken in by the wire and used to activate the card. The memory chip then sends the access code back to the reader, which then triggers the door, and allows the cardholder to enter. The technology involved is fairly basic, but it is more complex than that used in magnetic IDs. As a result, proximity cards cost a bit more to produce ($5.00 or $6.00 as opposed to $1.00 or $2.00). For many companies, the added costs are worth the convenience that comes with proximity cards. Accessories for Proximity CardsLanyards and badge reels are two of the most common proximity card accessories. A lanyard allows a person to wear his card around his neck. When he goes to a reader, he can have the card read without ever disconnecting it from the lanyard. Badge reels usually clip onto a belt, waistband, or pocket. They allow the ID to extend and retract as needed. Many prefer reels to lanyards because reels are less visible.
