School Safety

The safety of their children is every parent's top priority. When the children are at school, parents worry almost continually until their loved ones arrive back home, and they would like to think that their children are safe when they are away. As a school administrator, the parents' concerns become your concerns during school hours.

Most, if not all, schools have security guards present. This is necessary not just in high schools and universities, but also in elementary schools. Security guards are present for the worst-case scenarios, and can protect students from many threats (both from outsiders and other students); they should not, however, be the only line of security present in the school.

Using ID Badges Regularly

If your child rides a school bus to school and back home every day, chances are that he has been issued a bus pass. This ensures that only authorized students are permitted onto the bus. The same idea can be incorporated into your school building--you can provide each student and faculty member with identification so that security can easily identify people who do not belong in the school.

Guests frequently visit schools--parents who are considering sending children to a particular school in the future, parents and family friends who are coming to see a performance, or parents who are coming in to speak with a faculty member can all pass through the halls on legitimate business. In order to maintain a safe environment, your school should have a visitor policy in place so that all visitors are accounted for. This might include such details as signing them into the building, issuing a visitor pass, and giving permits for vehicle registration.
