Visitor RegistrationWritten by Serena Berger When families arrive to visit their children who are away at college, the first thing on their minds is looking at their child's living quarters to make sure that everything is in order. They are understandably concerned with security, so it actually serves a dual purpose that their first stop is visitor registration. Before they can enter the building, they will often have to present identification, obtain a parking permit and guest passes, and ultimately be signed into the building. While this gives them permission to visit their child, it also assures them that it would be difficult for unauthorized visitors to gain access to the dorm. In many corporate buildings, the scene is almost identical. When visitors or clients arrive, they must park in designated areas and undergo a security check and sign in to the building. Visitor registration is quickly becoming the norm as an essential part of the first line of security. Making Sure Your Building Is SecureIf you do not already have a security system in place, you run the risk of unauthorized people having unfettered access to your building. If you are in a retail district, shoppers may take advantage of parking that is intended for your employees. Fortunately, you can minimize both of these concerns by instituting a registration system at your workplace. In its simplest form, this consists of a logbook that records the arrival of visitors. If you have noticed strangers roaming your hallways, you might want to issue visitor passes that change in appearance over time so that their expiration is evident. For those who are concerned with their parking lots being abused, you can issue permits for both permanent employees and visitors, where the permits for visitors expire over a given period of time.
