Everyone loves having their accomplishments recognized and rewarded, and the field of academics is no exception. Many schools and universities give out academic awards as a way of acknowledging and celebrating the successes of their students. Academic awards come in many different styles, from medals and trophies to award certificates and plaques.

Varieties of Academic Awards

Different types of awards are appropriate for different academic situations. If you're organizing a spelling bee, for instance, it's not uncommon to use gold, silver and bronze medals like those used in athletic competitions. You can even get medals that are made specifically for spelling bees, with a little picture of a bee or an alphabet image on them.

For excellence in the classroom, all sorts of varieties of trophies are appropriate. When I won a history award in high school, for instance, I was given a geographical dictionary with my name printed on the inside cover. I've always cherished this award, particularly because I still use the book when I'm doing research.

Certificates are very commonly given out for academic achievement. They have a scholarly feel about them, and can be easily framed and displayed on a wall. If you're looking for something a bit more heavy-duty, you could also give out a plaque with the person's name and the name of the award engraved on it.
