The Internet is designed and used for the sharing of information. Businesses provide information on their products and services, government agencies provide information on their services, and news organizations provide up to the minute news on the Internet. Families are starting to utilize the Internet to provide information about their family through personalized, family websites.

Websites for Families

Almost everyone's family is spread out over hundreds if not thousands of miles. The long distance separating family units can make it difficult for family members to keep in touch. Distance isn't the only thing making it difficult to keep in touch, busy lives and time differences can also play a role in making it difficult to stay in touch with family.

Family websites alleviate some of the problems a family may have with trying to stay in touch. Websites are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, allowing distant family members to view updates at their convenience. Some family websites have message board capabilities giving viewers the chance to easily communicate with separated family members.

Anybody can take on the task of designing and maintaining a family website. Many family website vendors offer easy to use software to aid in the design and maintenance process. For those who are more computer adept, programs such as Frontpage or Dreamweaver can be used to build a family website. Either way the site will need to be hosted by a server in order to be viewed by family members. Sites designed through family website vendors can be free or carry a cost as much as $20 per month. Owners of individually designed websites can expect to pay anywhere between $10 and $50 a month for hosting.
