Want to custom design jewelry? Thought you'd have to empty your bank account to get the piece you always wanted? Think again! Jewelers today are much easier to work with if you want to custom design jewelry for yourself or your loved one.

How to Custom Design Jewelry

The first thing to do if you want to custom design jewelry is get inspired. Perhaps you once saw a ring or necklace and have been searching ever since for something similar; or perhaps you don't know exactly what it is you want, but you haven't been able to find anything suitable in your shopping trips thus far. Whatever your dilemma, do your best to draw or find a picture of the kind of jewelry you want.

Once you have a picture to share with the jeweler, the next thing to do is consider your metal and gem stone options. Does your design call for large gems or tiny gems, one kind of gem stone or several? Do you want to use platinum, yellow gold, white gold or silver?

Once these questions have been answered, it's time to visit a jeweler. The jeweler can take a look at your picture, determine the dimensions of the piece, consider the gemstones and metal you want to use, and offer you an estimate. If the price is more than you can afford, talk with the jeweler to see what kinds of shortcuts you can take (i.e. using silver instead of platinum) to lower the cost of the custom made piece.
