African Violet Plants

Written by Charles Peacock

African violet plants are a lovely addition to every home. When I was growing up our house was full of them, and I was always beguiled and intrigued by these luscious little plants. They're hearty, they're colorful, and the can brighten up any corner of your house.

Caring for African Violet Plants

Fortunately, African violet plants are easy to take care of. They are comfortable in the same temperatures as humans, so they will live easily inside your home. For an abundant bloom, it is important to provide your African violets with plenty of light--although they prefer bright light over direct sun. Depending on the position of your house, try to find a window area that is sufficiently lit but isn't exposed to hours of direct sunlight.

For maximum growth and blooming, it's a good idea to fertilize African violet plants regularly. If you take good care of them, your violets will usually grow to about 10-12 inches in diameter. They can fit into a four inch pot when they reach maturity.

A nice feature of African violets is their ability to stay in constant bloom. Regular watering (when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch) and adequate light will provide you with beautiful purple and pink hued flowers all year round. You'll also want to replace the soil in the pot every six months or so.
