Flower Nurseries PeoniesWritten by Shirley Parker The wholesale flower nurseries peonies often come from, usually grow their own plants in large fields, especially tree peonies. Or they may grow the plants in large seedling containers with drip irrigation lines that provide the necessary water and nutrients twice a day. It may take as long as two years for the roots to be strong enough that the young peonies can be shipped for safe planting upon arrival and healthy growth thereafter. A smaller retail nursery may purchase flower nurseries peonies on an as needed basis, depending upon the time of year. However, there are small family-owned nurseries that also grow all their own stock. Most planting is done in the fall, whether potted plants or bare root peonies. If a consumer orders directly from a nursery that is also set up as a mail order house, it is almost always bare root peonies that are available for sale at that time of year. There are exceptions, especially with today's fast shipping options available for obtaining fresh plants. Flower nurseries peonies are available from far-flung places. Nurseries in China have been allowed to export to a growing but still select number of countries in recent decades. But peonies are also grown in Lithuania, Japan, Mexico, Canada, France, and England, as well as the United States, to name only a few sources. Flower Nurseries Peonies Are Often New VarietiesGrowers are fascinated with the new species that can be propagated by crossbreeding. Some work with peony seeds, while others use grafting methods. Growers will wait several years before accepting or rejecting a new variety since young peony plants produce flowers that may be a little or very different than those produced by a mature plant. Record keeping is critical.
