The phalaenopsis orchid, according to the American Orchid Society, is the most commonly sold orchid variety in the U.S., capturing 75% of the market. They are a hybrid variety, meaning they are not wild but grown as cultivars. Their appeal lies in their tall, graceful profile and exotic elegance which looks well in any setting from modern to traditional.

The Phalaenopsis Orchid

This delicate variety became popular in the 1980's, when it replaced the Cattleya as the orchid of choice. It is characterized by small blooms on long, sturdy stems with broad, flat leaves. A single potted plant makes a striking, minimalist statement. There are many colors within this variety, ranging from solid pastels to stripes and spots.

With proper care, the flowers of the phalaenopsis orchid will last several months. They prefer bright, indirect light and should be watered every 3-7 days, depending on the soil type. Avoid placing them in drafty areas and make sure not to over-water, as this leads to bacterial growth. Normally, you will enjoy blooms once a year in the winter.
