Engraved Pocket Knives

In today's world of enhanced security measures, pocket knives don't travel the way they used to. It used to be that a computer technician, for example, had a pocket knife with him at all times, even when en route to a customer's site in another state. "When all else fails, get a bigger hammer ... or a pocket knife." Those in the know will realize I'm stretching the truth, but only a little here.

The first folding pocket knives were thought to have been made by the Romans, whose soldiers carried them along while "exploring" or seeking new conquests. The knives were needed for hunting and eating, as well as possibly defending themselves against two-legged and four-legged enemies who got too close for a long blade to be used. Pocket knives have remained survival tools for the military ever since, as well as for civilian scout programs, and are easily carried without being conspicuous.

Pocket knives are a great tool for the handyman to have. Some are so finely crafted that they've been handed down from father to son. Their usefulness is surpassed by very few other tools, and with the safety features that the best brands have, coupled with often beautiful embossing and optional engraving, they make fine gifts for an outdoor or indoor man or woman.

The Swiss Army Knife

Almost everyone has heard of the Swiss Army Knife by Victorinox and seen its imitators. This ingenious multi-tool has multiple blades and other tools designed right into it. Specialized categories of Swiss Army Knife have many choices available as gifts. The ordinary, everyday category can be small enough to fit onto a key ring. Some executive models are made in sterling silver and engraved.
