Youth Silver

Youth silver is that which bridges the gap between baby silver and full size place settings. Vintage youth silver is available in knives, forks and spoons. Youth cups are also available, which are very similar in basic design to baby cups.

In terms of dimension, youth silver typically runs about two inches shorter than a traditional place setting. For instance, knives are between 7 and 7.5 inches in length; forks and spoons are both around 6 to 6.5 inches in length. The overall circumference is also proportionate to the length, making them easy for children to handle.

Youth Silver: I'm a Big Kid Now

It's a real shame youth silver is "out of fashion." Youth sized cutlery are perfect tools for children to learn how to handle flatware in a graceful manner. Little hands can learn these skills with more confidence when they have utensils they can easily manipulate. Plus, the presentation of a set of youth silver to a child can be viewed as a precious reward, a sign that a child is becoming "a big boy."

Fortunately, many vintage sterling silver websites contain individual pieces of youth silverware, as well as complete sets. Many of these sets are available with or without antique monograms. Youth silverware sets make wonderful gifts to commemorate landmark events in a child's life, like potty training, the advent of kindergarten, or the arrival of a new baby brother or sister.
