Gifts For Bosses

Trying to figure out what to give your boss for the holidays? Treats and goodies are always welcome, whether homemade or in a commercial gift basket. But what if your boss gets several of them every year? If you'd like to give your boss something different, do a little snooping in his or her office.

We're not recommending you rifle through the desk, of course. But take a look around next time you're in there. What's on her desk or his bulletin board? Let's start with pictures. Does your boss display a photo of himself and his family skiing? He might like a headband or a pair of ski gloves, or perhaps a calendar with photos of great skiing mountains. Does she have pictures of herself taken in front of Buckingham Palace, the Louvre and the Great Wall of China? Think about travel books or hand-held translators.

Is there anything on the bulletin board besides schedules, timelines and phone lists? If you boss has posted a few Dilbert, Shoe or Doonesbury cartoons, you can find large collections in any good bookstore. If there are tickets to an opera, try to find the CD.

Bosses Are People Too

As in any gift-giving situation, the key is to take note of the individual you are buying for. Professional etiquette demands that your gift not be too personal, but that doesn't mean it has to be generic. If your relationship with your boss is close enough that you're buying her a gift, it's close enough to buy one chosen just for her.
