Unique Housewarming Gifts

Finding unique housewarming gifts is a great way to show your friends how much you care about them. When people have a housewarming (or apartment-warming or condo-warming) party, their acquaintances from work may bring a bottle of wine, and their parents might offer a food processor or some large and practical appliance. It's up to a really good friend to give a gift that will last longer than a fruit and cheese basket and bring a smile to a friend's face every time they use it or see it.

The search for unique housewarming gifts will definitely take you off the beaten path. Sure, if you want to spend a lot of money at Williams-Sonoma, you can probably find a "useful" kitchen gadget that's unique--because no one's ever heard of it and your friend will never use it! No one's knocking a monogrammed beverage bucket in the abstract, but for how much space it takes up and how infrequently most people will use it, it may not be a such great gift for all that it is unique.

A Caveat for Buying Unique Housewarming Gifts

Bear in mind, also, that decorating is an intense passion for many people, and moving into a new home is an opportunity for them to express their personality and style, not a chore. You may think that a brown and cream corduroy blanket is to die for; but maybe then you should get it for yourself, instead of for your friend who's going to be furnishing her living room in blues and grays. Really, this is just a caution that no website or store that says it specializes in unique gifts is going to be the one-stop shopping bonanza it claims to be. If you really want to find unique housewarming gifts for someone you love, you're going to have to get creative and do some leg work (or virtual finger work) on your own.

Think about the colors and textures that your friend likes. Think about his or her hobbies and pets. Think about what he or she has lingered over when you've been out shopping. And when in doubt, don't hesitate to ask what someone wants or needs! If you provide it, that makes you a great friend, too.
