Dept 56 collectibles include almost 3,000 different products. Dept 56 has been making collectible ceramic miniature villages and figurines since 1976. Starting with Christmas-themed miniatures, the company has since continually expanded in size and offerings.

The company began as part of Bachman's, a Minneapolis florist that used a number to identify each of its departments. The miniature department was number 56. The name stuck. The first Dept 56 collectibles offerings were the pieces that constituted the Original Snow Village, now a Dept 56 collector's Holy Grail. The Original Snow Village was "retired" in 1979 to make way for a new series of miniatures.

1984 saw the debut of the Dickens Village Series, featuring several shops and a church, the first of several miniatures in the Heritage Village Collection. The New England Village Series and Alpine Village Series followed in 1986. The popular Snowbabies bisque figurines were introduced that same year.

Dept 56 Collectibles Make it Big

By 1988, Dept 56 hit sales of $56 million. New launches continued through the years, keeping Dept 56 collectors busy. Dept 56 publishes "Celebrations" magazine and runs retail stores featuring its products.

Recent Dept 56 releases include Legendary Ballparks, Frosty the Snowman, and "Dick Clark's American Bandstand." Of course more Santas and Snowbabies are always being produced. The Internet is a great place to research all of the Dept 56 collectibles available.
