HIPAA speech privacy standards are in place to protect health care workers and insurance companies from unnecessary liabilities. HIPAA speech privacy requirements were recently outlined by WEDI, an official advisor to the federal government, in its "White Paper." These guidelines are meant to protect people against the possible misuse of highly confidential information.

HIPAA Speech Privacy Guidelines

HIPAA speech privacy standards are relatively new. Privacy rules governing written and electronic information have been in place for a long time, but there were no corresponding rules to ensure the security of private speech. What these privacy requirements do is to make it mandatory for health care providers and insurers to take reasonable steps to protect private conversations from unwanted listeners. It is up to the courts and insurance companies to decide what "reasonable" means.

But what is certain is that there are existing ways to safeguard against HIPAA speech privacy violations. One way is to mask private conversations with white noise sound masking generators in medical offices. White noise emitters create a field of privacy around important conversations. It's like an insulating blanket that will keep private conversations from reaching beyond their intended audience.

These types of systems require no specialize training or skill. You simply switch them on and adjust the volume of the emitters. Expense is minimal as these systems are really quite inexpensive. When you compare the cost of a white noise sound masking system to the cost of a lawsuit, the deal sounds even sweeter.
