Snmp Network Management

SNMP network management centers around the idea of managing diverse objects in a coherent environment. SNMP, or Simple Network Management Protocol, allows a wide variety of objects to be managed in a global network management architecture. Essentially, SNMP network management oversees the way in which computers access and receive data and statistics from other computers across a network (such as the Internet).

The Need for SNMP Network Management Tools

Because of the vast amount of statistics and data transferred using SNMP, the need for network management tools is imperative. Your network will have routers using SNMP to track the number of bytes, packets, and errors that have been transmitted and received on each port. Furthermore, web servers can tally the number of hits received on a certain server or website. Likewise, plenty of other equipment contains configuration information available through SNMP.

When any of this information transmitted through SNMP is transferred or received, it is kept in a database. This database is then described by an MIB, or Management Information Base, each MIB describing different aspects of computer operation. Variables retrieved from a MIB are then defined separately, in an Object Identifier (also known as an OID).

SNMP network management tools monitor your networking particulars, and can make sure the entire process is running smoothly. For instance, these tools will often query a device for the MIB variables needed. They will then often display the results in easy-to-digest format, allowing you to better assess your SNMP network operations.
