To the layperson, piping design might seem like a simple prospect. It may appear that the construction, interconnection and implementation of a piping system is a straightforward and simple prospect. As anybody who has designed a piping system can attest to, though, the technical considerations and mechanical underpinnings are remarkably complex.

The Elements of Piping Design

Piping systems are more than the simple pipes that convey liquids or other substances from one place to another. They also consist of the vast array of connectors that conjoin and regulate these pipes. Gaskets, flanges, valves and pressure hoses are merely a few of the components that are necessary to design a successful piping system, depending on the application.

Piping design also encompasses the framing system of the pipe. Support elements used to put the pipes in context and render it stable are an integral part of any piping design system. Items like pipe casings and other protective or aesthetic components are welcome additions to piping designs, as they make piping systems more usable in a variety of contexts.

The complexities of piping design frequently require the use of 3D computer-aided design software. CAD software will enable a user to construct a solid model design of a component to exact specifications, and then use that component in conjunction with other pieces to construct a complete piping system model. CAD software is an invaluable tool for piping design, as it offers accuracy and flexibility and allows for experimentation and innovation in piping systems.
