The most common injuries in volleyball are impact related. This may seem strange, since volleyball is neither an endurance sport nor a true contact sport. However, a regulation volleyball packs some heft, and travels at surprising speeds during the game. If your arms do not meet the ball properly, you can seriously jar your wrists and shoulders--these are the most common injuries among volleyball players.

Proper Volleyball Form

There are some aspects of playing volleyball that will hurt, regardless of proper form. Many people see bruises on their forearms when they first start playing volleyball. However, these usually fade after a few weeks of training, as your body will naturally respond by toughening your arms. The bruises rarely cause long-term damage, and shouldn't be a cause of worry.

On the other hand, other volleyball injuries can be more serious. Your wrists and shoulders are the most common places to feel soreness from volleyball, but elbow injuries are also regular. Joint soreness is a result of having the impact from hitting the ball transferred down your limb. The force travels down your bones to joints, where it must be absorbed if the joint is not properly positioned.

To avoid soreness and swelling from impact, all you need is proper form. Volleyball is somewhat unique in that the motions are unlikely to cause injury on their own--it is the impact from the game ball that causes trouble. Thankfully, these injuries disappear easily once you know how to position your arms when you bump, set, serve, and spike.
