Home Budgeting Software
Written by Sarah Provost
Home budgeting software is just one of the many ways computers can make your life easier by automating tasks you used to do by hand. Just as you no longer have to get up and search for the dictionary to check your spelling, using budgeting software puts an end to adding and subtracting long columns of figures. The term "wizard" is an apt one--once you've set up your budget, the calculations are done for you as if by magic.
Budgeting software does more than just relieve the tedium of arithmetic. There are versions available that offer everything from the simplest spreadsheets to complete financial planning. And when it comes tax time, not only are all your expenses clearly grouped and recorded, but many programs can help you do your taxes yourself, even if they're complicated and you're no accountant. Can you say "amortization"?
Budgeting Software Takes You From Setup to Analysis
Most of these programs are extremely user-friendly. I'm one of those people who consider finances, or anything involving numbers, with the same warm regard I'd give to a Gila monster nestled in my slipper. Still, I can tell you that these programs take you by the hand and lead you step by step down the road to financial responsibility.
I've attempted to set up budgets before, but until I used a template, I always missed some important considerations. Calculations throughout the month are done for you automatically. Then you are presented with a clear, easy-to-understand analysis of your spending. Once you see where your money is actually going, it's a lot easier to make adjustments and balance your budget.
