Rack optimized server solutions are being used increasingly. The rack system evolved out of the need for more computing power and storage ability in ever-decreasing office spaces. As applications that need more power and more space keep on appearing, so the need for compact storage solutions becomes more acute.

Rack Mounted Server Solutions

Rack mounted servers are used for larger systems, particularly where expansion is envisaged. Rack mounted systems come in sizes from 1U right up to 20U. The U, in case you're wondering, refers to the unit of vertically usable space in a rack mount. Thus, 1U is the smallest and 20 is the largest: 20U would have 20 rack spaces for equipment and would be 35 inches high, as each space is 1.75 inches high. However, in some cases, several units of 1U or 2U may be preferable to larger racks for certain reasons, depending on the system requirements.

A 5U rack mount server would be just one of the options you have when setting up your system. Even though, not all specifications are the same from make to make. If you think you need a 5U, be sure to ask how many hot-swap trays you'd be getting, and about the redundant power supply, as these two issues will greatly affect expansion capabilities.

It's best to talk to an expert about your server needs if you're not sure. The right advice now can save you a great deal of money further down the line. In addition, ask about the possibility of software installation and setup by the company, to get you off to a good start.
