Obtaining formal certification in Microsoft Office Suite can help form the foundation for strong skills for job hunters as well as those seeking advancement in their established careers. Certification courses have grown in popularity in recent years as more and more people see the benefit and convenience of software training courses. There are now many companies that provide these courses in a variety of formats, including instructor-led and online tutorials.

Office Certification Tracks

There are several different levels of certification for Microsoft Office products, and each provider may vary slightly in the way the courses are packaged and priced. Typically, the certification process will result in the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) title for successful students. Students can opt for a comprehensive course in four core applications, including the Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, and Outlook programs.

Successful completion of all three Word, Excel, and Powerpoint exams is typically required at this Master level. Students can choose to take either the Access or Outlook exams as the fourth requirement. Students may also opt for several lower-level certifications that show a demonstrated ability in one or more of these applications. Many people who choose this type of training typically need to hone their skills only in one or two areas.

Before signing up for any of the Microsoft Office certification programs, it's important to first assess one's current skill level. Most companies that offer this type of training also offer a skills assessment test that helps determine which course or exam would be most beneficial.
