Whether you're a footbag pro or novice, you might want to know a little about footbag history. Where did it come from? When did it become a recognized sport?

Footbag History

Footbag was invented in 1972 in Oregon City, Oregon, by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall. Stalberger, eager to improve his flexibility after knee surgery, joined his friend Marshall in kicking about a homemade beanbag. The two called their new game "Hack the Sack" and thus footbag history begins.

Determined to share their game with the public, Stalberger and Marshall designed a product they trademarked the "Hacky Sack." After Marshall's tragic death in 1975, Stalberger carried on promoting his new sport and product.

A major breakthrough in footbag history came when Marshall, along with many others, formed the National Hacky Sack Association. With the support of this organization and others like International Footbag Committee, footbag has become legitimate sport recognized the world over.
