Is it called hacky sack? Or is it called footbag? A common question, but there is an answer.

The Story behind Hacky Sack Footbag

So what is the difference between hacky sack and footbag? When the sport was invented by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall, they called their game "Hack the Sack." They also trademarked their product which they called a "hacky sack."

However, Hacky sack footbag actually has origins in Asian, African, and Native American countries. For instance, people in Nepal play a similar game with a cushioned coin. In the Far East, people who play similar kicking games call their weighted kicking objects a "shuttlecock."

Today, Americans commonly refer to a casual game of freestyle footbag as hacky sack. The international community, on the other hand, generally uses the term footbag to apply to all versions of the sport. Whatever name you call it, most people will know what you mean when you say hacky sack or footbag.
