The sport was initially founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano by refining the martial art of Jujitsu, and was melded to the fighting styles of feudal Japan. All these styles were integrated into a more modern sport, and was introduced to a great number of people when it was added to the Olympic Games in 1964.

People take on the art of judo for many different reasons. As a form of competitive and physical self-defense, it heightens confidence and keeps the body in great shape. It teaches both children and adults how to respect others and compete with morals and a calm demeanor.

The techniques behind judo includes physically grappling, throwing and unbalancing your opponent, using his or her own energy and momentum to incapacitate them. The philosophies of flexibility and a "gentle way" of handling violence is very popular, as it teaches that sometimes giving way (and not using force) which puts you at the upper hand to an opponent.
