All athletes should take precautions for knee injury prevention, regardless of whether or not they have ever experienced knee pains. Even the most prominent careers can take a turn for the worse when an unexpected knee injury occurs. Serious injuries to this vital joint often sideline players for several seasons, and oftentimes, athletes can never regain peak form, even after undergoing physical therapy.

Training right and choosing the best equipment are the two most important factors in knee injury prevention. Athletes can train themselves to run, jump, and land in ways that do not place unnecessary stress on the knees. For example, when basketball players jump, they should land with their knees bent and then let them give a little before straightening again. When athletes land on straightened legs, the ligaments and tendons in the knees end up straining against the downward momentum of the body. Doing this repeatedly wears the knees down over time, and eventually, something gives.

Jogging on asphalt or concrete also puts tremendous stress on the knees. Because such hard surfaces have no cushioning, every time an athlete's feet hit the ground, all the joints in his or her legs absorb the shock. Sports medicine experts suggest cardiovascular training in water. Aquatic training is very joint-friendly.

Shoes and Knee Injury Prevention

A very effective knee injury prevention technique is wearing athletic shoes that provide ample interior padding. Foot mattresses protect not only the feet but also all joints and muscles from the toes all the way up to the back. Moreover, the soles of shoes should be very shock-absorbent. Buying top quality shoes is very important for all competitors.
