Spanish recipes tend to be full of flavor, with only the freshest ingredients used. Though perhaps not as common in America as Italian recipes or even Japanese recipes, Spanish cooking has many wonderful components to it that make it an enjoyable cuisine to cook. Similar to many ethnic dishes, Spanish recipes call for simple ingredients that are mixed together to form mouth-watering meals.

Some favorite Spanish recipes include: Gazpacho, Habas con Jamon, Paella, Patatas a lo Pobre, Tortillas, Spanish rice, and much more. A good Spanish cookbook will outline the basic ingredients you will need to make any one recipe, and provide alternative ingredients for those hard-to-find essentials. In addition, your cookbook will likely give you tips on choosing produce that is fresh, or finding stores that sell the best habanera peppers.

Tantalizing Spanish Recipes

Gazpacho is a tomato-based soup that is served chilled, and it can be eaten as a meal when accompanied by salad and bread, or eaten as an appetizer before a main course of meat or fish. In Spain, it is often served in bars in glasses, and patrons drink this soup, as opposed to eating it from a bowl with a spoon. Other ingredients in Gazpacho include onions, green peppers, garlic, cucumbers, white wine, a small bread roll soaked in water, and salt. The ingredients are chopped, then blended together, and then chilled before serving.

Paella is another Spanish favorite. This meal is cooked in a "paellera," which is a round flat pan with two handles, that is typically placed right on the table for serving. Paella is normally made with shellfish, but it can also be made with rabbit or chicken. Another bonus to cooking Paella is that you don't need the exact ingredients that the recipe calls for if you can't find them. You can substitute other things, like frozen fish in lieu of fresh shellfish, and you can add fish stock to give the flavor a bit more depth. Typical ingredients in Paella are olive oil, water, fresh parsley, saffron strands, garlic, onions, carrots, tomatoes, red peppers, rice, prawns, clams, squid, and mussels. This is a flavorful dish that can be served alone or with bread and salad.
