Bonaire Windsurfing

Scuba diving is not the only water sport on this beautiful island; you can also enjoy Bonaire windsurfing. I have come to the conclusion I perform much better under the water than on the surface. I am strong enough to lift up the sail, that's not the problem. I think I have difficulty understanding the wind direction, and I'm very good at getting out to sea, but not that great at getting back!

The place to windsurf is on the east side of the island where winds can get up to 15-25 knots in December and through the summer. During the rest of the year, wind speeds slow down to 12-18 knots. There are a couple of great Bonaire windsurfing outfits at Lac Bay. Here you can rent equipment, get lessons or take out an ocean kayak.

They also have a couple of bars where you hang for drinks after windsurfing or ocean kayaking. Equipment rentals seem relatively inexpensive and if you are looking for a break from the underwater world, this might be the perfect activity. If you are traveling with a non-diver, Bonaire windsurfing might be something the two of you can do together.

Trying Bonaire Windsurfing

Lac Bay is one of the best places in the world to try out this sport. The bay is ideal for beginners and experts. It is about three miles long and more than a mile wide. Maybe I should go there--at least I wouldn't have to worry about ending up in Jamaica, although that wouldn't be such a bad thing!
