As recently as a decade ago Costa Rica was not a place you would think of for scuba diving. There was very little infrastructure to support a diving industry at that time. Recently, however, scuba diving has exploded in popularity. There are numerous diving companies up and down the Pacific coast that cater to tourists and locals alike. Exploring these areas causes extra excitement because they are virtually unexplored as of yet.

Making Diving Part of Your Costa Rican Experience

If you are interested in scuba diving on your next trip to Costa Rica, there are a few things you should know. First of all, the best time to go is during the dry season, preferably from February to April. This is when the water is the clearest and the visibility is the longest. During the rainy season, from May to December, the rivers flow into the ocean and cloud the view somewhat. However, diving can be done year round.

Secondly, you should know that the Pacific side of Costa Rica is the best place for diving. There are numerous diving sites along the coastline that offer a variety of species of fish. Some of the fish and wildlife that you can see include grouper, snapper, jacks, Cortez angelfish, mantas and eagle rays. On occasion, you can also see sharks in various locations.

The best place to see sharks is probably Cocos Island. Many have experienced swimming with whale sharks and hammerheads at this location. Cocos Island, however, is a great distance off the coast and is quite a trek. If this interests you, you should look into taking an overnight or multi-day tour, or chartering a boat yourself.
