Vacation Condos

Every year my family takes a vacation to the resort town of McCall, Idaho. It is a beautiful mountain town with thick forests, a stunning mountain lake, and great skiing in the winter. We've come here every year since I was 10 years old, and every year we've stayed in the same condo.

Vacation Condos vs. Hotel Rooms

Maybe it was because of these early experiences and memories, but every since then, I've been a serious condo fan. I don't much care for hotels or motels, and I think condos are the vacationer's best friend. Hotels are so impersonal and motels can be questionable, but staying in a condo makes you feel at home and I find it much easier to enjoy holidays when I am able to stay in a nice condo.

There's something about a vacation condo that makes you feel like you're at home away from home. I have many fond childhood memories of our vacation stays. I remember when I was 13 and got my head stuck in the banister. I remember when I slept out on the back porch of the condo and felt like I was camping out. I don't have any memories like this from any of the many hotel rooms I've stayed in over the years. Hotel rooms are all so generic that they are quickly forgotten.

I've always loved my family's vacation condo, and it wasn't until I was much older that I began to realize why we stayed in the same place every year. The reason is that my father was able to get a discounted stay there for one week every year through his membership in a discount travel group. The members pooled resources and then used connections in order to secure discounted prices at various resorts and from various businesses. Their group was the forerunner of today's discount internet travel clubs. Internet technology makes discount travel even more available to more people and travelers have seen prices drop dramatically as a result. Even my father is beginning to take advantage of internet travel discounts and is talking about branching out and going somewhere new on this year's family vacation.
