Explore Waikiki and the Ancient Landmarks

Waikiki is home to the famous Diamond Head crater. This is one of the most photographed landmarks in the world. To explore Waikiki without stopping by here is like eating a grilled cheese sandwich without the cheese. Diamond Head sits on the southeast coast of Oahu, and majestically looks out at the Pacific Ocean. It was originally called "Laeahi" by the Hawaiians of ancient times.

Laeahi literally means "brow of the tuna," which makes sense when you look at the crater. British sailors changed the name in the 1800s. They mistakenly thought the calcite crystals that shined in the sun meant that the crater was full of diamonds. This volcanic crater has been extinct for over 150,000 years. It is 3,520 feet in diameter and 760 feet at its highest point.

You can take 99 steps, 76 steps or a 225-foot tunnel to get to the top. The view from there is of the entire west side of the island. You can see from Waikiki to Koki Head. It is a view to inspire the soul and calm the disturbing waters of the mind.
