For those who imagine that the Lake Tahoe area is nothing but a major ski resort, a big surprise awaits them. Of course, the skiing is exceptional with world-class runs that beckon everyone from beginners to pros. At the same time, Lake Tahoe ski lodges indulge a skier's every dream and add all kinds of other winter sports.

Family Recreation in the Tahoe Area

Lake Tahoe has some great beaches, eight of which span the California south shore. Beautiful sandy shores are great for launching a canoe or catamaran or just lazing in the sun. Here's some good news for pet lovers--dogs are allowed on many of Tahoe's beaches. Year-round fishing charters are there for anyone who loves to sink a line into deep water for lake or rainbow trout. Taking the family on a whitewater rafting trip or enjoying a helicopter tour of the lake and its surroundings is also something fun to try. Winter fun also includes snowmobiles and Jeep and Hummer tours.

Switching to summer, there's plenty of horseback riding, several golf courses, and beautiful marinas with boat rentals. Visitors can enjoy the benefits of spas and health clubs, many of which are right inside world-class resort hotels. Biking, water sports, hiking, and camping are also great pastimes. Lake Tahoe and nearby Truckee offer a number of outdoor events, including music and arts festivals.

Like other major resorts, Lake Tahoe also provides a great backdrop for romantic weddings. Whether the couple prefers a summer or winter mountain venue or a formal wedding on top of a major hotel or even a quiet ceremony in quaint bed and breakfast inn, the setting will be breathtaking. The newlyweds don't have to go very far to find the perfect honeymoon setting, either. They can choose from beautifully appointed cabins, luxury hotel suites, or, again, the romance of a bed and breakfast.
