If this is your first visit to Santa Fe, you'll find that the most atmospheric part of the city is around the original central Plaza, dating from the earliest Spanish town of 1610. The best Santa Fe accommodations are within walking distance of the Plaza. This will allow you to savor the Old Town, the Cathedral, the Palace of Governors, and all the historic architecture that truly makes Santa Fe one of the most unique cities in America.

Old Santa Fe

Just north of the Plaza on East Palace Avenue is historic Sena Plaza, a lovely garden area surrounded by shops and restaurants. The plaza was once the courtyard of the Sena family, whose large hacienda was temporarily used by the territorial legislature after the capitol burned in 1892. Across East Palace Avenue from Sena Plaza is St. Francis Cathedral. Set in a tree-lined park, the Cathedral is one of the few buildings in Santa Fe not designed in the adobe style.

Walking tours of Old Santa Fe are available through Afoot in Santa Fe and Santa Fe Walks. These tours are two hours in length and will show you the ancient Anasazi Indian ruins, the city's history and architecture, and the modern museums and galleries. The tours begin from the Hotel St. Francis or the Inn at Loretto.

The best kind of accommodations in Santa Fe are those which allow you to experience Santa Fe's architecture and atmosphere. Vacation rentals and discount lodging in Santa Fe, New Mexico will actually allow you to stay in an adobe, high-beamed house with a fireplace or a wood-burning stove.
