Gatlinburg log cabin rentals are very popular among the skiing set. And why not? They're akin to having one's very own little skiing lodge, complete with roaring fireplace and toasty hot tub.

Gatlinburg Rentals: Snowy Paradise

Winter, for many, is the ideal time to visit Gatlinburg. Crowds have thinned. The noise has dimmed. And the skiing has begun.

Thanks to Ober Gatlinburg, a ski resort which opened in 1975, Southerners can ski multiple trails without venturing too far from home. Sure, it's mainly snowmaker snow, but hey--skiing is skiing. And Ober Gatlinburg also allows nighttime skiing, which can be a really fun alternative to dinner and show. Newbies don't have to be shy, either: Ober Gatlinburg offers lessons to all levels of skiers. And you can break out your snowboard and ice skates, too.

Coming home to one's very own log cabin after a day on the slopes is certainly much more satisfying than pulling into the lot of the Motel 6. Log cabins offer all the ambience of an old world ski lodge, with the added benefit of privacy: Yes, you can have your hot cocoa and schnapps in front of the fireplace in the great room at the lodge. But not in your underwear. Ah, the pleasures of home.
