Overview

Is it a gremlin? Is it a tiny Wookie? NO! It’s a Brussels Griffon! These little bearded angels pack a ton of personality into their tiny bodies. They usually pick a favorite person, on occasion 2. Make sure to make a great first impression so they pick you! You will have a little sidekick that truly wants to do everything with you. They conversely want to always be the center of attention, so they are not great with children.

Griffs take no note of their own size and play quite happily with much larger breeds. They will be wary of strangers and if the event calls for it, they will be quite protective of you.

Health

Brussels griffons are a typically healthy pup. Some not so common issues can include:

  • Syringomyelia: Here, a cyst develops and grows in the spinal cord. Over time, as the cyst grows, nerves in the spine can be pinched and damaged, causing other issues.
  • Heart problems: There’s a myriad of causes of heart disease in dogs. Age, health and nutrition all play a vital role. With 95% of heart diseases coming in small dog breeds who are 5 years or older, thinking about preventative care and coverage is smart to do.
  • Cataracts: A dog develops a cataract when the lens in its eye clouds. The clouding is caused by changes in the water balance or proteins in the lens.
  • Patella luxation: Luxating simply means out of place or dislocated. Patella is a kneecap. A Luxating patella is a kneecap that chronically moves out of its normal position.
  • Hip dysplasia: This condition is when the socket joint in the hip isn’t large enough, or more often too shallow, for the femoral head.
  • Corneal ulcers: Cornea is the transparent membrane on the front of the eye. A corneal ulcer, the cornea is damaged.
  • Kidney issues: Either acute or chronic, kidney problems and failure can arise from a number of reasons. Problems with the kidneys can create serious problems elsewhere in the body.

Lastly, be mindful flat-faced breeds have susceptibility to a condition known as brachycephalic syndrome which makes breathing in extremely hot conditions difficult.

While you always hope your pet will live a long and healthy life, it is always a good idea to invest in pet health insurance.

Keeping your dog’s mouth clean and problem free goes a long way to your pup’s overall health. Dental hygiene can be the cause or can be the byproduct of other serious health issues.

Visual inspections can be performed to keep track of the signs of potentially waning oral health. These signs can be anything from bad breath to abnormal chewing to loss of appetite.

Keeping ahead of these warning signs can pay dividends. A preventative approach can delay and stop many of the common dental problems from arising.

Oral health can be tackled in five basic steps:

  1. Brushing your dog’s teeth to prevent an undesirable buildup of plaque
  2. Feed your dog a diet where the high quality dog food has dental benefits
  3. Regularly give your dog dental toys and treats
  4. Use mouthwash, to help where brushing misses
  5. At the sign of any abnormalities, consult a vet. You can even do it virtually, from the convenience of your home.

Dogs are just like humans in that they can experience anxiety. The degree to which they are susceptible to anxiety and how they deal with anxiety is breed specific. Left unchecked, initial signs of anxiety could give way to an anxiety disorder. The symptoms of anxiety disorders can lead to a myriad of behavior issues.

Knowing the signs and symptoms will best equip you to keep ahead of it and to nip it in the bud at the earliest signs. There are options available to help with anxiety.

Grooming

It is essential to note that griffs will have one of two types of coats. The first is smooth and short which sheds regularly with an increase during a shedding season in the spring. The maintenance on this coat is minimal requiring weekly brushing and occasional bathing.

The second type is rough and wiry. This type of coat does not shed. The tradeoff is this coat requires much more engaged grooming. Weekly clipping to keep the coat tidy and hand stripping every 3-4 months. As with all dogs, keep your pup’s nails clipped, regularly check their ears to make sure they are clean and clear of debris and brush their teeth several times a week.

Cost

$1,500 – $4,000

Exercise

Griffs only need about a half hour of regular exercise. Pepper in a bit of interactive play and your pup will be satisfied. Remember that flat-faced dogs’ breathing needs to be monitored as they tend to overheat. Keeping your exercise sessions to the coolest part of the day will go a long way to keeping your pup breathing easy.

Nutrition

On average griffs will eat around 1.5 cups of food per day. Your pup’s specific needs will vary depending on age and activity level.

Training

As with all dogs, socializing your pup early with other people and dogs will have the best results. Your griff is quite intelligent but has the tendency to become bored. Training will be the most successful if it is mentally challenging, loaded with positive reinforcement and in short sessions.

Proper training is essential to ensuring the safety of your dog and those around you. Having your dog come when they should, and in general having them listen is something you want to address early in your pup’s life, as it will pay dividends down the line. There are many tried and true training programs to accomplish this training – faster and better than you might think!

Unless you’re living on a farm, or have the space, a yipping dog, or one that barks all day when you are gone could be an issue with the neighbors and/or landlord. Historically, dogs would bark to communicate with the rest of the pack when hunting and bark as a warning shot to predators eyeing up their flock. Barking is deep rooted in dogs and manifests itself in many ways and for a variety of reasons.

Just like any habit or instinct, there are effective ways you can train this issue away.

As regulations around marijuana have eased, the emergence of CBD oils for humans and dogs have sprung up.

Just to begin to dispel the negative stigma, CBD extract comes from Hemp, marijuana’s cousin. Unlike its cousin, there are no psychoactive qualities in CBD oil.
