Your health guru, Jason, has recommended you enrich your diet with some locally sourced acai berries, which of course he grows and sells. This morning you have them piled on top of your Greek yogurt. Can you toss a few to your pups?
No. Acai berries are not safe for dogs. Like chocolate, acai contains the compound theobromine which is toxic to dogs. While other sources may say small amounts are safe for your dog, this will greatly depend on the size and age of your dog. It is best and safest to avoid any amount of acai consumption for dogs.
What to do if you suspect your dog has gotten into acai berries? Acai is slow to metabolize, so monitor your dog for symptoms for 24 hours.
Signs to look for include excessive panting, muscle spasms, vomiting, and diarrhea. Should any of these symptoms arise, contact your vet immediately.
It is always a good idea to have pet insurance for unexpected incidents. Dogs can get into all sorts of mischief, never skip a vet appointment when you are unsure because you are worried about costs.
